Expert Tips to keep your
system running smoothly.
To improve the performance and longevity of your septic system, please consider the following guidelines:
Watch Your Water: Try and space your water use throughout the day and week. This helps your system work better and last longer.
Laundry Tip: Only do one or two loads of laundry one after the next. Wait a bit before doing more.
One Thing at a Time: Avoid taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time. Be mindful which activities add water into the system.
Less Food in the Sink: Try not to put a lot of food scraps in the garbage disposal.
Avoid Flushing Certain Items: Things like feminine hygiene products, paper towels, baby wipes, fruit stickers and prophylactics should not be flushed. They don’t break down and can make you need to clean the tank more often.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
Your Septic Tank is teaming with life! It's full of tiny living bacteria, that break down all the household waste.
Keeping their home healthy can save you money.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Choose the Right Cleaning Stuff: Use cleaners that say "non-toxic" and "biodegradable" on the label. Avoid phosphates. Choose "green" or earth-friendly products instead.
Harmful Chemicals: Never pour things like bug killers, paint, car fluids, or other dangerous chemicals down the drain.
Pick the Right Soap for Clothes: Use laundry soap that doesn't make too many bubbles. Look for "low sudsing."
Dryer Sheets, not Liquid Softener: It's better for your septic tank and keeps your clothes soft.
Don’t Flush These: Feminine products, cigarette butts, diapers, hair, coffee grounds, cleaning wipes, band-aids, or any birth control items.
Don't Overuse the Garbage Disposal: Try to use it as little as possible.
Kitchen No-Nos: Keep grease, oil, and fat out of your sink. Also, coffee grounds, and citrus peels (ex. orange or lemon peels) shouldn’t go down the drain.
Catch the Hair: Put traps over drains in showers and tubs to catch hair.
Keep the Grass Growing: Make sure there's always grass over the area where your septic tank drains into the ground.
No Heavy Stuff on Top: Keep cars and big machines away from where your septic tank and its drain field are.
Outside Care: Plan carefully if you’re building something new or planting a garden near your septic system. Don’t grow veggies on top of the drain field because they won’t be safe to eat.
